Latrobe Valley is made up of four major urban centres; Churchill, Moe/Newborough, Morwell and Traralgon, with smaller townships of Boolarra, Glengarry, Toongabbie, Tyers, Traralgon South, Yallourn North and Yinnar.

Churchill

Quick Facts:

  • Location: 11km south of Morwell
  • Gippsland’s University  and education town

Churchill is the gateway to the magnificent Morwell National Park and is the Latrobe Valley’s newest town. Churchill provides accommodation and services for the electric industry and also to the students and staff of Monash University’s only regional campus. Churchill is a hub for technology, art and research facilities as well as being culturally diverse with a large international student population.  

 

Morwell

 

Quick Facts:

  • Population: approximately  22,000
  • Location: 135kms South East of Melbourne CBD.
  • Coal was discovered in the Latrobe Valley in 1873 and mining began in Morwell in 1955.

Morwell is nestled in the centre of the Latrobe Valley and offers a great range of accommodation, hotels, clubs and restaurants to suit all and shopping to please every taste.  Visit the Latrobe Regional Gallery; Eastern Victoria’s premier art gallery featuring 8 exhibition spaces.  The gallery houses an impressive collection of works and regularly host a diverse range of travelling exhibitions.  Explore the PowerWorks museum and take a guided tour of the open cut coal mines and power stations, admire the aroma and colour of the Morwell Rose garden with over 250 varieties or leisurely stroll through the Morwell National Park featuring fern gullies and 43 species of native orchid.
