Moe/Newborough

Moe, located at the western end of the Latrobe City, is the gateway to the Goldfields of Walhalla and the snowfields of Mt Baw Baw and Mt St Gwinear. The town is located near one of the worlds largest brown coal deposites. With a population of 18,000 the town is supported by the power industry, yet has a small town charm and is home to a number of parks and gardens.

 

Things to see and do in Moe:

  • Visit Old Gippstown, Gippsland’s Heritage Park, an open air museum, which takes you back in time to Gippsland’s pioneer days. Walk through the restored 19th century houses and marvel at the vehicle and horse drawn carriage collection. Old Gippstown is also the host of a craft and produce market on the last Saturday of the month (excluding June, July and August).
  • Enjoy a scenic walk through Edward Hunter Bush Reserve which offers a variety of native plants and wildlife.
  • Visit the nearby Brown Coal Mine Museum in Yallourn North and discover the fascinating history and memorabilia of the original township known as “Brown Coal Mine” and the establishment of the power industry in the Latrobe City.
  • Stroll along the Moe to Yallourn Rail Trail taking in the diverse sites of bushland, lakes and distant mountain views as well as the imposing Yallourn Power Station.
  • Come and enjoy a weekend of music and entertainment over the labour Day Long Weekend with the Moe Jazz Festival (March annually).
  • Enjoy a day of high fashion and get that winning feeling at the prestigious Moe Cup held annually in October.

You can choose from a cosy cottage bed and breakfast in a bush setting, park your caravan with a view over a lake or relax in a motel in the centre of town, there is something to suit every budget in Moe.
