Walhalla & Mountain Rivers

Take a drive through the majestic mountain rivers country and be transported back to a bygone era.  Walhalla is a special place standing almost frozen in time much as it was a hundred years ago.  It was a bustling gold mining town in the late 1800s. In its heyday Walhalla was home to over 3,000 people, 10 hotels, 7 churches, schools and shops.

Today the township has a resident population of 18, but received many thousands of visitors each year.  You can take a tour of the Long Tunnel Extended Gold Mine that was one of
Australias richest and most successful gold mines producing over 13 tonnes of gold in the time of its operation.

A trip on the spectacular Walhalla Goldfields Railway is a must offering a thrilling ride high across the Thomson River Bridge.  Other points of interest include the historic hillside cemetery, where it is rumoured that people had to be buried standing up due to the steepness of the terrain. Horse riding, four wheel driving and bushwalking are also popular activities in these picturesque surrounds.
