MT WORTH STATE PARK

22 Kms Sth of Warragul
Car Park at Moonlight Creek Picnic Area
In the Strzelecki Ranges south of the Princes Freeway and accessible from Darnum and Yarragon.
In the 1920s some 12 timber mills operated to strip the hills of their timber. Subsequently the forest gradually returned. Remarkably, a few of the original old growth mountain ash trees remain.

Giants Circuit Track
Distance: 1.8km
Time: 45min
Leaving from the western end of the carpark this track partly follows a logging tramway route. After crossing Lorkin and Clark Creeks, the track enters a lush tree fern and blackwood forest. A short detour leads you to a mountain ash measuring 7m in circumference. The track then winds it’s way down to the creek. The track to the left returns to the car park, and to the right leads to Trevorrow’s Mill site past some old sawmill relics. Just before Trevorrow’s mill site is another track junction – this leads up and over the ridge to the Gardiner’s Mill tracks.
Moonlight Divide/ Moonlight Links Tracks
Starting just beyond the toilet block in the Moonlight Creek Picnic area, the Moonlight Divide Track leads up a fire access track through mountain ash regrowth forest. After about 600m the track swings hard to the left and up a very steep hill to the top of the ridge. Just before the track starts to climb, the Moonlight Creek track branches off to the right. Once on top of the ridge the Moonlight Divide track passes through dogwood and daisy bush and blackwood with ground fern understorey, and scattered mountain ash. There area excellent views towards Mt Worth and to the south. After 3.5km the Moonlight Link track is reached. The Divide track to the left continues through cleared areas marked by a pole line to a lookout and gate. The Moonlight Link track traverses similar terrain and vegetation to McDonald’s track.
Moonlight Creek Track
Starting at the northern end of the carpark, the first kilometre of track has gentle grades and is designed for people with limited mobility. The track winds through mountain ash, blackwood and tree ferns, and past Maslin’s mill site to a junction with the moonlight Divide track. From here it follows the creek through lush fern forests to Seymour’s Mill site, marked by a huge sawdust heap high above the creek. Several side creeks are crossed before the clearing at Bromfield’s Mill site comes into view. The track continues for a short distance, passes a single pine tree which marks the site of an early settlement and continues to another clearing and finally to the Moonlight Link track. Turn right to reach McDonald’s Track, or walk back to the carpark via the Moonlight Link and Moonlight Divide tracks. The return trip takes 3 hours and covers a distance of 8.5kms.
Gardiner’s Mill Track
This track can be reached just west of the carpark at Moonlight Creek Picnic Area. Around 3km return, one hour, passing through mountain ash regrowth forest and some open areas which provide good views of a cross-section of ash forest. The track continues along the tree fern lined Clark Creek. At the next track junction, the left track leads to Gardiner’s mill site along the old logging road. The track to the right leads to a bridge over Clark creek, the track on the left is the return track from Gardiner’s Mill site through a lush tree fern forest. An alternative return to the car park is along the track to the right via the Giant’s Circuit.
Maslin’s Mill Track
From the Moonlight Creek Picnic Area. The first section of this track is designed for people with limited mobility and winds through mountain ash and blackwood forest. The return trip is via the same track.

TOORONGO FALLS RESERVE

Toorongo Valley Rd, east of Noojee

The ToorongoFalls, on the Little Toorongo River are a spectacular feature, particularly following heavy rain. The walking track leads to the base of the falls, and there is a viewing point on the way there. The track continues across to the ToorongoRiver, eventually heading back to the car park. A branch track may be followed upstream to AmphitheatreFalls.
The walks beside the streams are most pleasant, with rock formations and many species of ferns. The main circuit is about 1.8km and takes about an hour to walk. The open, grassy areas along the river near the entrance to the reserve are popular for picnicking, BBQ’s and camping.
