The beautiful and diverse landscape of this region contains countless trails just right for walking and getting away from it all. It offers everything from a leisurely and peaceful stroll amongst wildlife and native gardens to the more advanced grade of hiking through rugged and unspoilt bushland.
A Few Tips:
When walking, remember to wear a hat, shirt (long sleeved in bushland and scrub to help ward off biting insects and thorny plants), sunscreen, insect repellent and strong walking shoes. Wear long lightweight pants if walking in summer and watch out for snakes. Take a waterproof jacket or jumper with you, particularly if walking in the high country. It is usually quite a bit cooler once you get into the higher altitudes. Sea breezes can also get quite cold.
· Take along some snacks in case your walk takes longer than you expect.
· Carry a basic first aid kit.
· Take plenty of your own drinking water.
· ALWAYS tell someone where you intend to go walking and when you expect to return. DON’T change your mind after leaving without letting someone know (e.g. going to a different destination, taking a different route or not going at all). In the event of an accident, knowing where you were planning to be may be helpful in getting assistance to you if injured or finding you if you are lost.
· Please keep to the designated walking tracks as wandering aimlessly through the bush can get you lost and damage the environment. Remain well clear of cliff edges, as most are unstable.
· Use designated barbeques and fireplaces only and make sure all fires are extinguished properly before leaving. Please do not leave fires unattended. In summer, please check that it is not a day of total fire ban before lighting your fire.
· Please take your rubbish home with you to dispose of, or use bins provided at car parks and picnic spots.
· If you plan to take pets along, please check with your local council, Department of Sustainability and Environment (Ph: 136 186) or Parks Victoria offices (Ph: 13 19 63) as pets are not allowed in National Parks and some reserves.
· Enjoy your walk!
